James F. Haggerty, President and CEO of PRCG, Haggerty LLC, is an attorney, writer, software entrepreneur and communications consultant with more than twenty-five years of experience in marketing, public relations and public affairs. With a broad background counseling corporate, nonprofit and individual clients, Jim is frequently called upon as a trusted advisor in all manner of sensitive reputation management issues.
In the area of litigation communications, litigation public relations and other complex crisis communications matters, Jim is considered one of the nation’s foremost experts. Over the years, he has been involved in numerous high-profile crisis matters and legal disputes, including the some of the largest product liability, intellectual property, antitrust and employment disputes in history. His experience also includes representing a minority-owned bank that was unfairly targeted with mortgage fraud allegations by the New York District attorney; working for Native Americans in the largest class action lawsuit ever filed against the United States government; and representing a New Jersey grandmother in the largest single-family Holocaust restitution claim in history. He has also worked on the Jonathan Pollard spy case, the historic Screen Actors Guild labor dispute against the commercial advertising industry, and successfully advised Consumers Union (nonprofit publisher of Consumer Reports magazine) on two high-profile defamation cases—the Suzuki Samurai rollover case and a product disparagement lawsuit brought by The Sharper Image Corporation over the Ionic Breeze air cleaner.
He has worked on numerous crisis matters in the U.S. and abroad involving product recalls, accidents, workplace violence, government investigations, insider trading and financial fraud. Building upon his work as a consultant, Jim is also a well-recognized writer. His landmark book on litigation communications, In The Court of Public Opinion, was called “… the perfect handbook for this age…” by Financial Times. Now in its second edition, In The Court Of Public Opinion is a groundbreaking look at the use of communications and public opinion strategies during lawsuits. In addition to Financial Times, the book was positively featured in publications including The Boston Herald, The New York Law Journal, American Lawyer, Law Society Gazette, The Washington Post, The Holmes Report, PR Week and O’Dwyer’s PR Newsletter. Jim’s new book, Chief Crisis Officer, will be published in 2017 by Ankerwycke Books, a division of the American Bar Association.
In 2012 and 2013, Jim was nominated for a Neal Award, considered “the most prestigious editorial award in business-to-business journalism,” for his monthly column in American Lawyer’s Corporate Counsel magazine. He is the only full-time public relations professional ever to be honored in such a manner. In 2012, Jim was also honored by the Irish Echo, the leading Irish-American newspaper in the United States, as part of the publication’s “Small Business 50.” In 2015, Jim founded a software start-up, CrisisResponsePro, a subscription portal that brings an organization’s crisis communications team together and provides the resources for more efficient and effective response. In 2016, CrisisResponsePro was named as one of the Global Top 100 technology startups by Red Herring magazine. From 1997 to 1999, Jim was a Senior Vice President and the Director of New York Operations for The Kamber Group, at the time one of the largest independent public relations firms in the nation. From 1997-2001, Jim served as Executive Director of the International Lawyers Network (ILN), a worldwide federation of 75 law firms in 60 countries on six continents. He has also worked in public affairs for the City of New York, and for U.S. Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan.
Jim holds a B.A. in Political Science and English Literature and Rhetoric from the State University of New York at Binghamton, and studied Law at Fordham University in New York and Stetson University in St. Petersburg, Florida (J.D.). He is admitted to practice Law in New York and Florida, and is a member of the New York City and New York State Bar Associations. Jim’s articles and other writing have appeared in USA Today, The New York Times, Forbes, The National Law Journal, the New York Law Journal, Law Practice Management, PR Week and numerous other publications.
