Robert A. Simon, Ph.D. is a Licensed Psychologist an Internationally Recognized Leader in Forensic Psychologist Consulting with over 30 years of experience in the legal domain of family law and domestic relations. Based in San Diego, CA and Maui, HI, Dr. Simon consults on complex parenting and child custody cases and is an active teacher and lecturer on an international level.
Dr. Simon's professional practice focuses exclusively on forensic psychological evaluation and consultation in child custody disputes. In addition to custody evaluation and mediation, Dr. Simon is a leader in providing expert witness testimony, strategic case consultation/”second chair” services and review/critique of child custody evaluations and other family law forensic work products related to custodial issues. Dr. Simon co-authored the groundbreaking book entitled “Forensic Psychology Consulting in Child Custody Litigation” that was published in May 2013 by the American Bar Association. Dr. Simon has written for the Family Advocate (A publication of the American Bar Association) and writes a monthly column entitled “Forensic Corner” for the Section of Family Law of the American Bar Association. Dr. Simon is widely published in scholarly journals and is the author of a cutting edge article on conducting custody evaluations in Military Families published in the Family Court Reviewand his article on the importance of comprehensive analysis has been published in the Family Law Quarterly. His upcoming article on the many problems with the use of psychological testing in child custody evaluations will be published this fall in the Journal of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. He is currently working on books on the subjects of co-parenting and on the importance of a social science informed approach to family law litigation in child custody and parenting matters.
Dr. Simon teaches and lectures both within the United States and internationally. Thus far during 2017, Dr. Simon has given invited lectures to the State Bar of Maryland, Section of Family Law, the Los Angeles County Bar Association, Section of Family Law, the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, the International Association of Family Lawyers and The World Congress on Family Law and Children’s Rights and the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges. Dr. Simon was recently invited to be the lead trainer at national conference for the family consultants of the Family Court of Australia/Federal Circuit Court of Australia held in Werribee, Australia and was honored to be invited to present a plenary lecture at the 17thNational Family Law Conference in Melbourne, Australia. This past July, Dr. Simon was the invited guest of the Family Justice Court of Singapore and the Supreme Court of Singapore will be in Singapore as an invited guest of the Family Justice Court of Singapore where did a full day of judicial training and was the keynote speaker at the Family Justice Court’s Family Justice Week 2020. Later in 2017, Dr. Simon will return to Australia where he will be a featured speaker at the annual national wide judicial training for the Federal Circuit Court of Australia and he will be lecturing in three Australian cities on domestic violence and child custody litigation.
A member of the Board of Directors of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts, the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges and the World Congress on Family Law and Children’s Rights, Dr. Simon is also member of the editorial board of the Family CourtReview.
