HON. NANNETTE A. BAKER
Nannette A. Baker is the Chief Magistrate Judge at the
United States District Court in St. Louis, where she also presides over the
Janis C. Good Mental Health Court. Before she was appointed to the federal
court, she served on the Missouri Court of Appeals in the Eastern District of
Missouri for six years, where she was Chief Judge from 2008 until 2009. She also served as a circuit court judge in
the City of St. Louis before she was appointed to the appellate court.
Judge Baker is a graduate of Saint Louis University
School of Law. Following law school, she
was a law clerk for United States District Court Judge Odell Horton in the
Western District of Tennessee. She later
worked in private practice at two St. Louis law firms. While working in private
practice she served as the Chair of the St. Louis Board of Election
Judge Baker is the Co-chair of the editorial board of the ABA’s Judges’ Journal. She was appointed to the Standing Committee for Publishing Oversight in 2017. She is also a Past
Chair of the National Conference of Federal Trial Judges of the American Bar Association
Judicial Division. She serves on the
executive committee of the NCFTJ. Before that, she was Vice Chair of the Appellate Judges Conference from
2010 until 2011. She was appointed to the American Law Institute in 2016. She is also a member of the
Missouri Bar, the American Bar Association, the National Association of Women
Judges, and the Women Lawyers Association of Greater St. Louis. She has also served as the Chair of the
Minorities in the Legal Profession Committee and on the Executive Board of the
Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis, and as Vice President of the Mound
City Bar Association.
Judge Baker is very involved in the St.
Louis community. She is a member of the Archway Chapter of the Links,
currently serves on the Board of Directors of Provident Counseling. Her past
board service includes Marian Middle School, Gateway Greening, Incorporated,
Covenant House, Missouri, St. Patrick Center and The College for Living. She
also volunteered as a Truancy Court Judge at Soldan High School and as a Mentor
in the St. Louis Public Schools. She is past Treasurer of the University of
Tennessee National Alumni Association and past president of the St Louis
Chapter of the Tennessee Alumni Association.
Judge Baker has presented legal
education programs for the ABA, the Mound City Bar Association, the Bar
Association of Metropolitan St. Louis, the Missouri Association of Trial
Attorneys and the Missouri Judicial College.
She authored several articles in the St. Louis Lawyer magazine focusing
on affirmative action as well as on the hiring and retention of minority attorneys
and major area law firms. She also served as the editor of the Spring 2015
issue of The Judges’ Journal which focused on mental health courts and as the editor of the Summer 2018 issue of the magazine which focused on Bail Reform.
