Leigh Alexandra Basha is a partner in Holland & Knight LLP's Private Wealth Services Group where she devotes her practice to her clients' needs in the areas of domestic and international taxation, estate planning and administration, business law, and pre-marital agreements. She is a fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC). Ms. Basha is the head of the firm's International Estate Planning Practice. She is also a member of The International Academy of Estate and Trust Law, Academie Internationale du Droit des Successions, des Trusts, et des Fiducies and the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP).
Ms. Basha is the author of several published articles and has spoken at and moderated several continuing legal education programs, nationally and internationally. She was a speaker for STEP, "Current Developments in International Tax and Private Client Planning on October 23, 2007 in Washington, D.C. She was the Panel Chair for the IBA Conference in Singapore "International Estate Planning for the Asian Client" on October 18, 2007. In September, 2007 she was the co-author for an article in the New York Law Journal titled "Buying a Pied á Terre in France." In 2002, she received Outstanding Performance by a Speaker Award from the International Bar Association at the International Wealth Transfer Practice Conference in London and in 2006 was named Top Virginia Lawyer by Richmond Magazine. In 2001, she served as a visiting professor at Ecole de Formation de Barreaux de la Cour d'Appel de Paris and L'Universite de Paris II (Assas).
She is the co-chair of the International Business Exchange Council (IBEC) of the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce. Ms. Basha serves as Chair of the International Tax Committee of the Real Property Probate and Trust section of the American Bar Association including the 3520 project, ESBTs for NRAs and 1041NR project.
Ms. Basha is also secretary of the Committee of Individual Tax and Estate Planning, Wills, Trusts and Succession of the International Bar Association as of Fall 2005.
Ms. Basha earned her A.B. degree from Georgetown University (1982), her J.D. degree from The American University Washington College of Law (1985), and her LL.M. degree in Taxation from Georgetown University Law Center (1989).She studied at Institut d'Etudes Politiques, Paris, France (1980) and Paris Institute on International and Comparative Law (1983). She is admitted to practice in District of Columbia, Virginia and Maryland. She also holds a Virginia real estate license since 1982. Ms. Basha was named a Virginia Super
Lawyer in 2006 and 2007 and a Washington, D.C. Super Lawyer in 2007 for Estate Planning and Probate.
Ms. Basha served as Chairperson and Program Chair of the International Practice Section, and Chairperson of the Wills Estates and Trusts Section of the Fairfax Bar Association. She currently serves as a Director of French American Chamber of Commerce and the Brazilian-American Cultural Institute.
