Laurene M. Heybach is an attorney and Director of the Law Project of the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless. She received the Sandra Neese Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Association of State Coordinators of Education for Homeless Children and Youth in 1998 for her work on behalf of children experiencing homelessness. A 1978 graduate of Marquette University Law School, she has practiced civil rights and poverty law for twenty-nine years. During the last twenty years her work has focused on the legal needs of children and families and particularly the needs of homeless families and youth. In conjunction with her staff, she has secured important legislative and policy changes in Illinois on behalf of homeless students as well as provided legal representation for hundreds of affected children. She has successfully brought litigation against school districts in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs on behalf of families, youth, and children experiencing homelessness to secure the rights afforded by the McKinney-Vento Act. The Law Project provides extensive community outreach to homeless families and offers training, training materials, and advice to professionals throughout Illinois.
