John I. Spangler, III is Chair of the Construction and Government Contracts Group for Alston & Bird LLP in Atlanta, Georgia. His practice focuses on representing contractors, owners and design professionals in the negotiation and drafting of design and construction contracts, and in litigating, arbitrating and mediating construction disputes. Mr. Spangler has over twenty-five years of experience handling construction-related transactions, including joint ventures, design-build, construction, construction management, design, program management, and development agreements and project finance transactions. On the dispute side, he defends and prosecutes all types of construction-related claims, including delay, interference and acceleration claims; extended overhead claims; and claims of defective construction and defective design. Mr. Spangler is past Chair (1994-95) of the Atlanta Bar Association's Construction Law Section, is on the Governing Committee of the ABA's Forum on the Construction Industry, and is a construction arbitrator certified by the American Arbitration Association. Mr. Spangler received his J.D. in 1980 from Washington University School of Law in St. Louis, Missouri, and his A.B. in economics in 1977 from the University of Illinois. Mr. Spangler received an Amicus Curiae Award from the Georgia Supreme Court in 1986. Mr. Spangler has been named since 2002 in Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business as one of the country's leading construction lawyers, has been named as one of Georgia's Top 100 Super Lawyers, and has been named since 2004 in The Best Lawyers in America.
