Matthew Hall is a dual England & Wales/Ireland-qualified lawyer, who practises in London and Brussels. He concentrates on all areas of contentious and non-contentious EU and UK competition/antitrust law, including State aid. He also advises on EU internal market law, including public procurement, and EU regulatory law, as well as BREXIT issues. His litigation experience includes cases before both the EU courts in Luxembourg and the English courts.

On the competition/antitrust side, Matthew has substantial experience with merger control (including “second phase”, remedies and worldwide multijurisdictional cases), State aid, cartels, competition litigation (including cartel and other follow-on cases before national courts, as well as EU court appeals), competition compliance/training, competition audits, market investigations and general counselling on trading agreements and practices (including abuse of dominance, distribution (including on-line), agency and cooperation agreements between competitors). He advises main parties in regulatory and government investigations and third party complainants and has regular dealings with the European Commission, UK Competition and Markets Authority and other government bodies, courts and regulators in the EU and elsewhere.

Matthew also advises in relation to EU internal market rules, including in particular free movement, market liberalization, and public procurement/government contracts. His experience further includes a wide range of EU/UK regulatory matters, including the specific regimes covering, amongst other sectors, pharmaceutical products, life sciences including medical devices, veterinary products, chemicals/REACH, transportation, food and beverage and energy.

Matthew is vice chair of the American Bar Association (ABA), Section of Antitrust Law’s (SAL) International Committee.  He is a past vice chair of the SAL’s Economics Committee and a former member of the steering committee of the ABA, Section of International Law’s International Antitrust Committee. He is also a past member of the steering group of the UK Procurement Lawyers’ Association and past vice chair of the British Chamber of Commerce in Belgium, EU Committee’s Competition and Trade Task Force.

Matthew regularly speaks at seminars, conferences and training sessions on various competition/antitrust law and regulatory topics. He also publishes on these topics, including for a range of ABA publications. His recent articles have been nominated for the 2016, 2017 and 2018 Antitrust Writing Awards.
